Shift work kills people. That sounds dramatic. The data backs it up.
A study in Rehabilitation Nursing found that shift work and long hours shorten lifespan [1] and increase cardiovascular death risk. Among healthcare workers surveyed, 32% slept six hours or less per day. Error risk climbed 15% on evening shifts and 28% on night shifts. By the third consecutive night shift, risk jumped 17%. By the fourth, 36%.
The Nurses' Health Study tracked this over years [2]. Nurses who worked rotating night shifts for six or more years had shortened lifespans. Those who worked six to 14 years of night shifts saw a 19% increase in cardiovascular death risk. Beyond 15 years, that number hit 23%.
One in 10 nurses reported a car crash they blamed on fatigue or shift work.
How Night Shifts Wreck Your Sleep
Night work disrupts your circadian clock. This clock governs your nervous system. When it breaks, everything downstream breaks too: weight gain, heart disease, high blood pressure, chronic pain.
Rheumatologist Dr. David Silver puts it plainly: "Poor sleep is one of the greatest contributing factors to chronic pain, stress disorders, and high blood pressure."
Your parasympathetic nervous system repairs your body while you sleep. Skip the sleep, and repairs stop. Dr. Silver says: "When you sleep, your parasympathetic nervous system takes over and repairs the systems damaged from the previous day. If you're not sleeping enough, your nervous system can't do its job."
For many shift workers, restoring normal sleep patterns feels impossible.
Sentra PM ®
Sentra PM is the only sleep aid clinically proven to enhance nighttime parasympathetic activity and improve restorative sleep. Nurses and other professionals who work long hours have used it for over a decade to support their natural sleep cycles.
Dr. Silver adds: "I have recommended Sentra PM for over a decade to patients with chronic pain syndromes. I see positive results in the majority of my patients taking it."
